Audi Q5

Following the original launch the Audi Q5 was an instant hit with car buyers looking for a mid-sized sport utility vehicle (SUV). The latest version steps up to the mark with an extensive update and new technology. It’s now available as a coupé-style ‘Sportback’ variant too.

The Exterior

Not too big and not to small and seen by many to be the ideal family size, the latest Q5 adopts the same ‘family face’ as the other SUV models in the Audi range. Fractionally longer thanks to new front and rear bumpers, the upper section of the front features LED headlamps with daytime running lights. The S line and Edition 1 specified models get Matrix LED headlamps.

In profile the Q5 has a more streamlined look than previously thanks to a redesigned side sill insert, and that sleek look is carried through to the rear with the help of a new chrome trim element running between the light clusters and a new diffuser insert in a variety of finishes.

As with other SUV models it’s the ‘Vorsprung’ version that is top of the range with to its larger 21” Audi Sport alloy wheels in gloss anthracite black and new tail lights which employ next generation OLED technology as a world first in the automotive sector. This feature is exclusive to orders in the UK. The lights are equipped with extremely efficient ‘organic light-emitting diodes’ (OLEDs) that generate a homogenous light surface. Each is split into three tiles of six segments each, enabling different designs in a single feature and which brighten when another vehicle is sensed close by. Technology moves forward yet again.

The Interior

The German brand is making inroads into the fast-changing digital world and this successful mid-size SUV has been extensively updated inside and out, with highlights including the latest Audi touch-screen MMI (multi-media interface) touch control in the cabin.

A single screen, varying in size between models now controls everything. The famous Audi central rotary controller which previously operated MMI functions has gone, handily replaced by a small central storage unit.

Detailed navigation mapping delivered by ‘MMI navigation plus’ appears on the central screen but also extends, if desired, to the 12.3” Audi Virtual Cockpit display directly ahead of the driver, behind the multi-function steering wheel. This feature is now standard across the range.

The mix of technology varies across the range with, inevitably, the range-topping ‘Vorsprung’ model maxing out on features like a Bang & Olafson sound system and a heads-up display projected onto the windscreen. Much of the sophisticated safety science is featured as standard but options are available through the various Audi ‘packs’, as ever.

Passenger comfort is assured by generous seats, fully adjustable in front, with plenty of leg and head space for five occupants. The rear can accommodate 550 litres of luggage, rising to 1550 litres with the rear seats fully folded.

Driving The Audi Q5

New technology also appears under the bonnet (hood). There’s a good range of the latest in engine science with a 201bhp turbo-diesel diesel and a 261bhp turbo-petrol. Both of these engines use mild hybrid electrical assistance to give performance and fuel economy a boost. It is the diesel that impresses most. Effortlessly strong from low revolutions, it provides smooth and progressive acceleration as the revs rise. The petrol variant is quicker though, speeding to 62mph (100kph) in 6.1sec.

Added to the range are two plug-in hybrids: A 295bhp petrol hybrid and a 362bhp version. The latter only in the Competition and Vorsprung Competition model levels. Whichever is chosen, both can run, say the company, for up to 37 miles on electric alone.

The ride is aimed squarely at the comfort zone. Different suspension options are available and are model dependent but all offer a relaxed journey. That said, performance is certainly lively enough and as all models have four-wheel drive, great traction in slippery or bad road conditions and good grip through corners is assured.

Is It Reliable?

Initially, the Q5 only managed an average result but those days are past and now driver satisfaction reports suggest that across their catalogue Audi are beating the best for reliability.

Buying An Audi Q5

An impressively accomplished cruiser, the Q5 handles practical family duties with ease. All models have a well-judged driving experience, plenty of useful equipment and good practicality. This premium SUV comes highly recommended for buyers wishing to import from the UK to other global destinations through the MHH International comprehensive service.
